Default Power Steering went out

I have a 2008 XB I actually got it in July of 2007. So it's not even 3 yrs old yet and the power steering went out. Took the car to the dealer and they said my 36,000 mile warranty was up because I have 42,000 miles on my car. They quoted $800 to repair the steering. They said the xB has electric power steering and the computer for the steering had went out. A friend recommended that I should call Scion since my warranty had just ran out, my car wasn't even 3yrs old yet and the power steering shouldn't go out that soon. So I did and come to find out that I have an extended warranty I never knew I had. So all I had to pay was a $50 deductible. My car is now fixed and working great. Has anyone else had any problem with the power steering

Electronic power steering- ? Whats with that.
To error is human - it takes a computer to really foul things up-
Is his type of thing going to be the bain of 2nd generation Scion's or second millennium auto's- Black box replacements

I call her --SCorpION-- or PLAN B, Plan A is scooter, PLAN C is convertible

My xB2 was purchased Jan 2008, but manufactured (according to the VIN) in April 2007. This is my first digitally controlled car (outside of the ECU in my 1990 GSX Eclipse) and I'm personally satisfied digital is used far more than it should in today's automobiles. I remain an analog fan and inserting digital to second-guess or even over-ride my intentions is at best an inconvenience, at worst a major annoyance and interference. To make matters worse, failure of digital controllers is far more likely than the traditional analog interfaces they've replaced. Unfortunately, it appears to be what we're stuck with today, but I can't even begin to consider it a desirable evolution !

Hello,

I have a 2008 Scion with 60K and the power steering just failed. But the estimate I got was $1500.00 to fix it. I am in the midwest so maybe the mechanics are more expensive here.

I have asked the dealer to see if Toyota will help out at all. If you look at 1500.00 is 10% of the purchase price, seems a little excessive!

My scion xb 2008 had same thing happened, i.e, power steering ECU failed two days ago. I bought this car Nov., 2007. It has only 19,500 miles on it, however, 3-years warranty just passed two months ago. The estimate is $1,135 (part: $635, labor: $480) to fix it, it is huge if compare it to the purchase price. Did anyone have luck to get help from Toyota? Thanks

I believe I read somewhere the steering ECU is the only one located outside the cabin (low in the engine compartment) and it's only protection from the elements is a gasket. I'm wondering if the problem is just water/vapor getting to it as the gasket ages. Maybe we need a relocation kit?

You know, this is acutally getting kinda scary. I have heard quite a few problems with this generation scion. Doesnt seem like the quality is the same as the gen 1 or toyota.

I talked to Scion Customer Service Rep. She agreed to pay 50% of total dealer charge.
