HDA8004
50 Watts x 4 at 4-Ohms and 1% THD+N , 86 dBA SN at 1 Watt into 4-Ohms , 10Hz - 40kHz Frequency Response (-3dB) , 75 Watts RMS x 4 @ 2 ohm , 150 Watts RMS x 2 @ 4 ohm , THD (RMS Power 1kHz) 1% , These are horrible numbers guys!! S/n 86 decibels means this isn't a clean amp. THD stands for total harmonic distortion, and this is 1% which is usually reserved for low end 1 (mono) channel amps where noise sometimes helps the amp along. Notice these amps are not CEA compliant; this means they are tested and rated according to "real world" numbers that are achievable. In the header it talks of "max" ratings which you will only see if you also believe in the easter bunny!!!

Thanks for your feedback. We apologize for not clarifying how our S/N was measured. Some brands will use S/N at rated power, which is fairly meaningless. The useful number is at 1W to judge residual noise (S/N). Our stated spec was an average between minimum and nominal gain positions, but certainly at 1W in accordance to CEA. CEA S/N is nearly always at Min Gain due to the 2V input, 1W output method. They are CEA2006 ratings. A CEA2006 rated 86dB at 1 watt S/N is actually very good. You can check the CEA rating for any amp that participates in the CEA2006 standard…Kicker, Rockford, Audison, Focal, or any others and will see that our HD amp compares very well regardless of brand or cost.
The THD rating is <1% @ rated power. This does not mean we have 1% distortion, but"<" means "less than". Again this is a CEA2006 spec and any participating amp's rating is supposed to be less than 1% THD at rated power. It really just means we are in compliance. This stops companies from claiming that an amp is say 200W without telling you that 200W rating is at 50% distortion. To be specific, our actual THD is around 0.04%. To put that into perspective, 0.1% THD is considered inaudible. As stated, many brands simply follow the CEA guideline for <1%, which is the onset of clipping, indicating the clean full power delivery of the amplifier. THD between 1W-10W is most important, since the majority of listening is done there. 1% is also considered the common threshold for audible distortion for full-range playback (a trained listener might be able to hear 0.1% under very controlled conditions). For bass playback, we'd challenge most anyone to hear even 10% if not 20%. Here’s some actual measurements and couple additional notes: 1) Power output is measured with all channels driven. Some brands drive just one channel to alleviate the full load on the power supply 2) CEA power spec means that it will deliver that power for at least 1min without roll-back or shutdown. In the case of HD, they never shutdown into 4ohm, and only thermal into 2ohm after 20min or so playing sine waves. Many amps barely make 1min. 3) Channel Separation (Crosstalk) is inaudible above 50dB. Even the best turntable (LP) could barely score in the high 40’s. Without mentioning who specifically, a major brand at over 2x the price has 82.5dB S/N at 1W in their 4ch, worse THD and crosstalk. HD amps and speakers were built on the idea of offering a very good product for an extremely competitive price. |
