Purely for salt reasons. It will kill a set of wheels in no time. Corodes the schitt out of em. Most are aluminum. Theyre too expensive to let get ruined cuz your too lazy too switch em. Most will put winter specific tires on the steelies and great gripping tread on theyre nice 'summer' wheels. The worst theyll see is rain. And if you need to sell em, theyll be worth more than some corroded ones.

Most states dont have this issue. Just us in the 'salt belt'.

Yeaah, depends on the weather too. I ended up having salt on my car for pretty long recently. I finally washed it on Saturday, with the wind whipping through the wash bay, and the temp dropping from 40 to 30, and the water froze to my car hah! By the way, Damaged, 0 for the low tonight and 8 tomorrow. High was 16. It was actually high of 60 on Sunday. It keeps going up and down every couple days. No "chinook" but one "polar vortex" or "arctic blast" after another.

So I wonder if aftermarket wheels generally have less durable finishes on them. Most people obviously don't change their wheels. Or are they just being more careful? Both of my previous cars had clearcoat on the alumnium I think.

I NEED YOUR HELP! After having to order a 5th wheel bc one of the first four had a bent lip, my mechanic has informed me that the wheel caps will not fit on the front 2 wheels of my xb; that the lug screws are too big I guess?

They fit fine on the back wheels, and TireRack.com said they'd fit on my car. I'm extremely frustrated with TireRack so far over the whole thing. The mechanic says I can buy 'wheel spacers' that would make the front wheel caps fit, but I'm not super eager to do that. I'm ranting here so I don't call TireRack and make a fool out of myself yelling at some poor customer service rep.

Any help/tips/recommendations? If I have to return the wheels/tires and start all the way over I will.

what kind of lug nuts are you using cause that maybe the issue not the studs.

I don't know a lot about wheels, so if I make a mistake please be kind, but here's the wheels:

It looks like the 5 lug nuts are outside of the center cap. Any hardware used for installation is either what came on the 2008 xB or what came with the wheels in the tirerack link above.

The car is currently at my mechanic ~45 min away. Apparently the axle is sticking out of the wheel too far for the front caps to fit, which is why he recommended the spacers?

oh ok thanks so it is the Axle bolt that is sticking out not the lugs studs. So the center cap wont go on cause it gets pushed out but the wheels will bolt up fine with out the cap?

If you really like the wheels and you have a lot of thread on the studs then try adding spacers at least a 5mm for now to see if it works.

Wow sorry to hear about your situation!

Ok, if you have a bent lip, I hope you're getting TireRack to take care of that, including shipping back!

Also, after you figure out your options, you should bring the wheel cap issue up to them also. I'm sure the mechanic knows what they are doing. I have to believe you mean the wheel hub part in the middle since I don't know how the lugs would affect that. I guess you can either make TireRack send you some spacers or make them take back the wheels and get a new set. I don't know if you want the front wheels on spacers. Some members here have the rear ones on spacers, but they say that's because the wheels/tires aren't as flush with the fender on the rear as they are on the front. Putting spacers on the front might look a little odd... or it could be fine since your wheels are maybe back in farther.

Bottom line is make sure you get TireRack to take care of their mistake. You talked to them, and they let you know this would work, and it didn't.

There are plenty of wheel experts here so you'll get it figured out.

Thanks a lot guys. I had my terms mixed up. Chris-Garage is correct, the lug nuts fit fine, it is in fact the axle bolt that is sticking out. I haven't seen the wheels on the car...so if they're flush now on the front I don't get spacers and if I have a little room I should get the spacers on the front. (and TireRack should pay for them)

If I do end up getting spacers for the front...should I get spacers for the back? It just seems weird that the cars wheels wouldn't be equal-distance apart, respectively.

I'm not attached to these wheels, but I do like them and it wasn't exactly an easy decision to decide on a set.

I just wish things would work like they're supposed to sometimes. :/
