In my opinion, the front speakers are not too bad and put out decent amounts of bass and treble, although the overall sound from the front speaker pair can only be called "good" at best. It's the rear speakers that are too small and also the overall sound from the rear speakers is muddy. Some folks have replaced all four door speakers and have been disappointed by the lack of bass, then they go back and add a subwoofer. In my case I replaced just the rear speakers with Kicker 6 1/2" component speakers with the tweaters mounted high up in the rear doors. I like the overall sound now. I feel I got a lot of bang for my buck ($80) but your experience may differ.

Scion packages the manual for the audio head unit separate from the owner's manual. For my 2011 the base head unit owner's manual part number is PT546-00111 but older years will likely have different numbers since head unit features change over the years.

From my manual, you need to:
  • turn the radio on
  • press and HOLD the SSP button to activate the Audio Control mode
  • while in this mode, rotate the Multi Control knob (the big one) to scroll thru the audio controls: Fader/Balance - Bass - Treble - AutoSoundLevel - Subwoofer - AudioBookSpeed - IpodDirectControl - AdvSoundRetriever (your menu may be different)
  • when the desired control is displayed, rock the Multi Control knob up/down and/or side to side to make your adjustment
  • after a short delay of no activity, the Audio Control mode ends and the normal display is resumed
Another thing to check is the Car Type. By default the radio is set for Scion TC. Make sure the SSP car type is set for XB. To check/change this, press and hold the SSP button while the power is Off. The Multi Selector can then be used to solect SubWoofer On/Off, Opening Title (can be customized by you), and the SSP car type.

Hope this helps.
