That reminds me of many years ago my car wouldn't go over 20 mph. I thought it was a fuel pump,so I got one and it took most of the day to install because the push rod in the block kept falling out of position. Come to find out, it was only a fuel filter (a couple of bucks). So you are right, look at the most simple things first.
