I was told by my salesman (ok, I know don't trust them) that the engine in my Scion was a Corolla engine and it had the 10k oil change interval. I had a maint required led come on at 5K miles and when I took it in, the service writer told me that I was due an oil change. When I told him about the 10K interval he just shut me down and told me that it was a 5K engine and the engine was a Camery engine. I could have sworn that the owners manual also said that I had a 10K engine. What gives?? I am about to contact Toyota about it though. It is much more expensive to do oil changes at 5K vesus 10K miles plus the type of oil that is required to be used.

The 2008 -2012 xB's have a 2.4L engine called the 2AZ-FE, which is also in the Scion tC (1st gen), Toyota Camry, and Toyota Matrix. Not the Corolla.

I change my oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles - whichever comes first.

I believe that the 2011 Corolla XRS came with the 2.4 engine. Now maybe the salesman was confused or not well informed about the changes for the 2012 Corolla's.

If you stick to the 5k oil changes as indicated by the maintenance light on the dash you should do just fine. The extra cost of having to change the oil twice as often as they told you shouldn't be much of a problem.

My xB burns 2 qts of oil every 5k, so soon I won't have to change the oil, just the filter! lol

2 questions:
A. Is the Canadian manual in KM or Miles?
B. Are the engines in the Corolla the same as the US or are there unique models not sold south of the border?

There is an uprated engined Matrix version that uses the same 2.4 as the xB. In sales quotas and atatements, the Matrix is included within the Corolla sales.
Also, the xB is in the same chassis model line as the Corolla, being the AZE-151. The AZ is the engine, while E is the letter used for the Corolla line. The 151 is the generation indicator within the model. The 140 ad 150 are paired, with the 150 as the "uprated" chassis of the pair. It is sometimes called the "Super Corolla."
The Japanese version is, in fact, sold as the "Corolla Rumion."

So, the engine is actually IN A Corolla when it is in your car.
The same engine is ALSO in a Camry model , a Rav 4, the Lexus RS, the tC, the Avensis, and number of other Toyotas.
More info on the AZ engine family can be found here:

Whether it is 3 months or 3000 miles or every 6 months or every 5000 miles, changing the oil and filter is probably the cheapest insurance you can buy for your car.

Im running 0w20 and just reset off my maintenance light for another 5k miles. Ill probably change when it starts blinking again. Its been 5k since my last oil change and my xB had eaten 0 of the oil it was filled with.

3mo/3k miles is very dated. you could easily go 5mo/5k-6k if you wanted to but even then its still fine. The owners manual is telling you 3mo/3k to CYA

3Kmi oil change is a waste of both natural resources and your wallet. Don't change more often that 5Kmi unless there's a darned good reason (ie, foul environment or usage). If you're running synthetic, don't change more often that 8Kmi unless for the same reasons as above. Just because in the past a 3Kmi oil change was the norm, doesn't mean it should be today.

The Canadian manual is in KM.
Not sure if they are the same, it's a 1.8L version here as the standard, but a 2.4L if you get into the XRS model. Based on the output, I'm pretty sure that the xB has the same 2.4L as the Corolla XRS.

BTW, I checked again on my manual, and the first three oil changes are to be done at 8,000kms (5k miles), and then the 16,000kms (10k miles) after that, so it's the same as what 2K11 was saying, except he had alreadyconverted it to miles.

The US model has ONLY the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine, which is the same as the Corolla/Matrix XRS.
Thanks. I don't realize, but an not surprised, there they brought over the 1.8 engine to Canada.
