Toyota recalled 1.13 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks Thursday because their engines may stall, the latest in a string of quality problems at the Japanese automaker.

The recall covers vehicles from the 2005-2008 model years sold in North America. Three accidents and one minor injury have been reported, though Toyota said a link to the engine issue has not been confirmed.

The automaker said vehicles with 1ZZ-FE engines may contain a defective engine control module, the computer that regulates the performance of the engine. In some cases, a crack may develop on the module's circuit board, which could prevent the engine from starting, harsh shifting or an engine stall.

Toyota said it will replace the engine control modules on the recalled vehicles at no charge. It will begin mailing notifications to customers with affected Corollas and Matrixes starting in mid-September.

Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled more than 10 million vehicles worldwide over the past year for a range of problems, including faulty gas pedals, floor mats that can trap accelerators and braking problems in its Prius hybrid.

Federal regulators have been investigating the possibility of engine stalls in the Corolla and Matrix models since December and intensified their probe earlier this week.

Sadly, this is getting ridiculous . . .

As for us, we have 2AZ-FE engines, so this doesn't affect the xB2. The 1ZZ-FE is the 1.8L for those models. The 2AZ-FE is a 2.4.

Toyota is still #1 in sales even with their problems. Brand loyalty is amazing. On another note...

Scion xB
Remaining current in the generation that debuted for the 2008 model year, the quirky Scion xB remains both boxy and muscular-looking. Then as now, the xB comes adequately powered by a 158 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine it originally shared with the Toyota Camry. A five-speed manual was the standard transmission, but we found it a bit too notchy shifting for our tastes; instead look for models that come with the four-speed automatic. While no sports car, the Scion xB delivers athletic handling abilities even a casual motorist can appreciate. You’ll find used xBs generously equipped with standard vehicle stability control, front-side and side-curtain airbags, keyless entry and a premium audio system with full iPod integration. A roomy interior can transport four six-footers in complete comfort, which is why xBs of this generation are often used as taxicabs. With the back seat folded flat its cargo volume rivals many midsize SUVs.

You will find in more recent sales numbers Hyundai will soon beat us. Its something we're (TMMK) making a point to try and avoid with many model redesigns in the next couple of years. If not, we'll all be screwed! :D

If Hyundai beats us, we deserve to be beaten. I have driven two of their models as rentals and they SUCK! They have poor cabin design and are not at all attractive. Funny thing, both of them were red...hummmm...Enterprise must like red cars.

Hyundai is coming up on us and coming very quickly. Possibly the fastest quality and sales turn around i've seen within a car maker. Honestly they make pretty good stuff. I love their new Genesis line as well as the recent redesign of the Sonata and others.

With the new design of the Camry, im very disappointed in Toyota. They're moving in a path like dodge did and tried to make all their cars look identical.
