I need to save up the $$$ to get a set of wheels, but for the time being I want to make my stock hubcaps black. I don't want to spray paint them or anything like that. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I would go about doing so??

Hmmm, short of using black paint....I guess that you could preheat an oven to 350 degrees and place the hubcaps in the oven for 45 minutes....no wait that is not a good idea....hmmmm, o.k. back to the black paint....hmmmm, remove the hubcaps from the vehicle prior to painting....wait I have another idea...no I don't just kidding! :naughty:

Just remember to take off the little Scion emblems in the center of the hub caps before you refinish them.

If I spray paint them, I'm worried that the paint will chip off and look like crap. I was looking for some type of alternative like the possibility of a powder coat or something similar.
They haven't chipped at all for us. They still look like when we did them. We also did a clear coat over the top which seems to be a good thing as well. You will be impressed on how well this works. The Krylon for Plastics is awesome....talk about a cheap...original....fun mod!!

you could always cover them with black vinyl and then cut out the holes, or if you want the shaggy look glue some black carpet on them.....but I have to agree with everyone else and suggest you spray paint them. Thats what I'm gonna do as soon as I decide on a color. :p

As they are PLASTIC, powdercoat won't work. It uses electrolisis (sp?-> it's late) to bond color particles to metal, which is then baked to melt it on and make it last.
Plastic can either be melted and a color element added and recast or be surface coated with something. Basically, paint is about the only cheap way I know of to recolor them. Anything else I know of but vinyl will cost more than alloys (400-700 for decent cheap ones).
I'm not sure if vinyl would good or not. Alot depends on your intended look, finances, and resources.

I like the naked steelie, as detailed in my steelie centercap thread . . .
