Bumper Black Out & Corner License Plate Holder

6940 Views 38 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  SamCarroll
I'm going to black out the center of the bumper soon. I can always put the license plate holder back on there once I'm done. But I was thinking of covering the holes with bondo & painting. Then, installing the plate on a holder on the right or left corner of the bumper. Can you guys recommend or show photos of a plate holder for the corner of the bumper for a Gen2 XB?

Also, other than paint... Is there good film that can be used to black out the bumper like the stuff used for the A-pillars? If so, I suppose the stuff would need to be heated to conform to the shape.

Edit: The pictures at the top of page 2 (original 10-post, page format) show both a-pillars and grill. It demonstrates how each changes the look of the xB.
Yeah I've done this! I like it a lot better. Brings out even more of the boxy shape in my opinion.
I have thought about doing this....can you post some close up photos to see how they look? How hard was it to peel them off? I figure I would use a heat gun to do it but thought I would ask first.

Thanks!

Ooooh! The Miata. BTW, I went with lighter wheels thanks to your wheel weights post (Here or on Club XB, dunno).

I love Miatas, but my wife gives me a lot of sh1t about the possibility of buying one.

Also... your bumper blackout is vinyl right? Satin or glossy?
Mine is satin.
Was it easy to cut to fit? Does the fit look clean and legit?

you have to get the carbon fiber plate ! i wont allow you to do anything else , hahah !
the black out tape on the top of the doors, is that covering up paint as well?
yesssssssssss thats how i got my blister
just by pulling the tape off? Im seriously considering taking the front pillar tape and the door tape off. I have an eraser wheel to take the residue off once peeled. If i dont like it i think i know of a place to order new black out tape :p
i got pansy computer desk soft silky hands, now you have me worried.

As it is a fairly complex set of curves, all HIGHLY visible, I let a local sign guy do it. I now could probably do it (esp. after watching and helping).
(Edit: I'm talking about the front grill black-out, as there are so many parallel discussions here)

Ok I'll see if I can get a good picture of mine. With heat, the only problem you should have is it coming off in smallish pieces.

Oh, also be careful around the windshield, because the tape can get stuck between the glass and the pillar.
Heat is a central trick in both getting vinyl off and on.

Couldn't agree more. I helped a friend with some vinyl stripes on his mustang, and heat was what kept us sane.

I also did his tail lights.

Sweet! My Mustang is white. No stripes on this one though. Wife's drives it and she doesn't like stripes. :s
