The sound response from the drivers in the spare tire spot will be different than the sealed box because the new area will be boomy. The well will vibrate at lower frequencies making the sound muddy. I used to build enclosures and harmonics can cause these uneven tones. We used to fill the insides with bulk insulation to help keep over response to a nin. Good luck with your project, it's going to look good.

So you just run without the spare tire? I've seen essentially the same kit but with a single sub and you flip your spare tire over so you can keep it with you.
but this isn't $800 bucks. I removed my spare as well for my amps and spare battery and cap.

I wasn't at all implying the other kit was worth even half of what they're asking for it. Just implying there are other options that retained the spare. I like the option of two subs more but in the end for me, I would build one the same way but for one sub so I could flip my spare.

All I was really asking is if he could still run a spare with that box since he had mentioned the subs didn't need a lot of air. My guess is no but wanted to make sure. Great write up though and a much better alternative to the over priced pre-made kits.

my subs needed .40 cuft of air space each. So basically its a 1x1x1 box so even with that small i had to notch a corner because the way the spare hole isnt centered in the floor. I couldnt be happier with the sound and look. For only costing me $20 and 5 hours of my time. Best mod i've done. Especially since i had these subs/amp from my truck previously.
Looks great Sam....filing this away for later mod when I finally get around to updating my son's sound system.

put some polyfill in there(same kinda stuff that is like in a pillow, that polyester pillow looking stuff) it will really help with the harmonics and overall sound.

Poly is a grey area, but most installers don't use it. it can't hurt though.

Sam, hows the vibration of the cover panel?

make a panel out of 1/2" masonite and place it on the bottom of your beauty board that has the locks and use a air nailer to secure it or screws for a less permanent fix and then simply bridge it up.

If it were for one of my customers I would replace the whole beauty board and go with a look similar to the one in this car I did back in 2005.
