Based on stuff I've read . . .
I'm thinking of getting a cheap spoiler/wind-deflector from EBay, painting it satin black, then mounting it with tape (NO holes in the rear door/hatch).
The cheapest is sold by Motor Blvd Parts out of California, for around $50.

Anyone got any recommendations/experience?

I got an inexpensive pre-painted eBay spoiler a few moths ago and I like it a lot. Had it put on by a shop so it would be measured and leveled correctly (and I didn't want to drill into my car). I'm careful with it just to be on the safe side, but I think it's sturdy.

Looks exactly like the OEM ones, and so far is just a good!

And for those who plan on getting them pre-painted, the paint color I got, Blackberry Crush Metallic (3N0), was a perfect match!

I ended up getting one from Nopi. I'm happy with it, but I'm not sure if it is any difference from the cheaper ebay plastic ones.

I would suggest against taping only. That was and still is the trend with the xB1's and works for those. It is not a good idea with the second gen's as there is less surface area in contact with the hatch, the leverage ratio is higher on the second gen (increased even more with speed) and being in a climate conducive to hot weather tape will simply not be strong enough alone.

In some ways you're attempting to attach a diving board to a wall be putting tape on the very end of it. This is a vast exaggeration but bear with me... The xB2 only has attachment points on the rear hatch for the spoiler. The spoiler footprint, in no way goes over or around the roof to allow for leverage diffusion (think rock climber holding a ledge vs rock climber trying to be spiderman) which means there is only downforce on a part that only has a side connection. Said downforce is only emphasized by wind, closing the rear hatch and of course, gravity. If it were the tiny eBay lip spoiler it would not be a real concern but given the design, it is simply not suitable for tape only. The leverage ratio has been discussed but also simply the design having the open center with the footprints being on only the outsides of the spoiler mean there will be forces not only pushing down, be while moving they will push in the opposite direction as you are traveling.

Long story short, for your safety and those traveling behind you, please bolt it up. It might be fine for a stretch of time but tape alone with the factory/factory style spoiler is more of a risk than I would take and one I would try and sway others from as well.

FWIW (or not worth :)) -- tape definitely has its uses, but I'm totally unconvinced for anything that experiences pressure. Maybe it's just personal bias, but I don't trust tape attached to tape window visors and I wouldn't trust a tape attached spoiler either. Perhaps I'm just jaundiced :)!

I ended up drilling holes for the bolts AND used the tape. It feels REAL secure.
When test fitting, the fit didn't look like it would be secure enough for my tastes. It is WAY too small an overall area for both the overhand and the wide gap between the side attachments. Plus, it sticks up a bit into the airflow. I was concerned that air would get between the hatch and the spoiler, lifting it off by applying pressure directly to the tape pulling it apart.
The tape sealed it up, while the bolt clamps it all together. Perfect together.

Tape works best in a compression force, then decently well a side-push force. It fails much faster when the forces are pulling the to parts apart.

I got my painted spoiler for my 2011 stingray from eBay from this company
PAINTED SCION XB 08-12 FACTORY STYLE SPOILER | eBay
looks like it is now $110 painted, and shipping included. I paid $130 last May. The stingray paint code is 8T4.

hey man is yours attached by tape or bolts? or both? im really iffy about tape holding a wing up just sounds crazy to me lol but idk i like going with the communities word

It is no big deal to use the bolts to attach the spolier along with the tape. Just be careful when you drill as there are wires on the left side. Just make sure everything is lined up correctly and you shouldn't have any problems.
