I just took possession of my nice clean 2013 XB today. I am very happy with it, 16,542 miles. One thing stumps me...that dash mounted MPG indicator is all over the place, very erratic, useless as it is. Let off the gas it goes to 90, it fluctuates anywhere from 18 to 90 MPG and anywhere in between. It is if it is a rheostadt tied to the gas petal.

I don't know what to make of it.

thanks,

bill

It is "tied to the gas pedal". If you want average MPG then keep pressing the button.

I would think it's more related to what the computer thinks it's injecting and not so much related to the pedal.

My 2002 Jetta had a simular guage too, yeah pretty much useless. My Jetta's mpg calculations were never right, I always got better numbers by doing the math myself. I just leave my XB showing miles left in the tank. Not that I think it's accurate. I know when it drops below 10 miles left, at anytime I could be hit with loss of power and sputtering. I always try to refill at a 1/4 thank but at 15 miles left, I make it a point to make getting gas an extreme priority.

The left-hand "DISP" button controls the Multi-Function Display. Keep pressing it to cycle thru the information available. On page 140 of my 2011 xB owner's manual, it says the following information is available:

- current fuel consumption (a better word is "instantaneous")
- average fuel consumption
- driving range (or Distance to Empty)
- average vehicle speed
- elapsed time

Your display is probably set to the first one (the "instantaneous") which shows MPG at that particular moment. Press the DISP button once to show Average MPG.

I always leave my display showing Distance to Empty. I've observed that every time the car is refilled with gas, the driving range is reset.

Have fun with your car.
