The Diahastsu, the Subaru Dex, and the 2nd Gen Toyota bB are all brand engineered variations of the same vehicle.  It came out in 2005 originally.

They look alike as they ARE basically the same with brand-related differences, like trim, FWD vs. AWD, and engines (use one from appropriate brand).  The three different companies are working together on the line.  In Japan, the car companies are set up different than in the US, with many companies working together.  For example, Kanto Auto Works builds the Gen 2 Scion xB (USDM)/Toyota Corolla Rumion (JDM), but also builds a range of other vehicles sold under the Toyota name:

If I read things correctly, Daihatsu is the primary manufacturer (and builds several other Toyota-branded products, mostly sold in Japan), with the Toyota branded and engined bB and the Subaru branded and engined Dex built on the same production line.

So, all three look VERY similar, as they ARE similar.

As for the Gen 2 Scion xB, its body is derived from the gen 2 bB, which IS also the Daihatsu.  So, they look quite a bit alike.

The second generation Scion xB is off of the Toyota Corolla Rumion, the second generation Toyota bB is completely different. The Toyota bB stopped with the first generation Scion xB, then picking up with the Toyota Corolla Rumion.

Your right.
I was referencing the design lines/look, rather than any mechanics.
The Rumion is notably larger than the bB. The Rumion/xB2 is based on the Matrix/tC underpinnings, in turn derived from the Celica and Corolla.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Just for more info-

On the bB, the gen that became the first gen xB is based on a small Japanese market platform that as used on several small car lines, including the US market Echo/Yaris/Vitz, and is VERY closely related to the xA (the JDM Ist).  The xD is a sister/version of the 2nd Gen Ist.  The new gen Yaris is a brand new platform and not related to the current Ist.
The new generation bB is based on the underpinnings of the Daihatsu Sirion, which is also the Toyota Passo.

The more I learn about Toyota and how their business works in Japan, the more complex it gets . . .

Bullshit -- The Rumion wasn't even released until six months after the xB2! The xB2 was based on "improvement" requests from U.S. xB1 customers and the 2005 cosmetic changes to the bB! To try to trace the xB2 from the Rumion is ludicrous!
