Just a quick question for you.

A good friend of mine had a first gen xb, and is dying to mod it. Unfortunately, hes on a serious budget.

He is wanting an axleback, but has a very minimal amount to spend. I just so happen to have an unused vibrant resonator (resonator, NOT muffler), in my garage full of parts, and thought about suggesting getting the oem muffler taken off, and welding it on as a replacement.

Are the first gen's ungodly loud without a muffler? I doubt the resonator will do a TON, but it should help quiet it down a bit.

Any suggestions or experience in this area are appreciated!

Here it is: A vibrant straight through resonator, with about 5 lbs of resonator "material"

3 xbs and none were first gen. Sorry. Im sure others will know. I wouldnt think the exhaust set up would be too much dif from 2nd gens. If it has the scuba like ours, itll be all good, fine with axle back straight piped too. Not loud at all.

I just purchased a new to me XB. When I drove it off the dealer lot to test drive it, I was surprised that such a stock looking car had a performance exhaust. But when I stopped and looked under it,I saw the muffler had rusted right at the bend and was completely disconnected. So to answer your question, it sounds fine. not raspy or clackity. I would leave it like that except, i would like to do some long distance travel with it and it is just a little louder than I would like for that. A muffler like you showed would probably tone it down just right.
