on my way home from work, i was coming up to a stop light like usually downshifting into 3rd around 25-30mph then second gear around 15-20mph
slowing down to a complete stop. light turned green and gradually took off shifting into second around 12mph cruised on up to about 30 and went for third gear and i got nothing. felt like it went in like usual but nothing there went back to second gear and tried agian and same thing...i pulled over and sat there to try and engage 3rd gear. slowly let off the clutch, so i tried 4th gear and same thing...im about 20 minutes from home, mostly freeway. so i have to shift from 2nd to 5th to get home. note:1st, 2nd, 5th, reverse all work fine. what happend to 3rd nd 4th

This is a long shot, but here it goes. I don't know how hard it is to see the levers that control the tranny gears but I had an older Camry and the same thing happened to me. The clip that holds the shifting cable on came off, I lost 3rd and 4th gears. After reattaching the cable,I fashioned a new clip and that fixed it. I hope this helps.

brought into local dealer yesterday to find out my box with only 50k on the od, is no under factory warrenty nd the only problem is my shifter bushings and cables. which is not the case. i personaly tried to engage 3rd gear from transmission directly without gear selector installed. you can tell right off the bat by comparing to 1,2,5,r that there is nothing there for 3rd gear. im am now out 154$ for diagnosis with no real answer help please anyone

Some may consider me totally in left field with this input, but nonetheless, to me it's serious. Sure, it feels nifty to decelerate though your transmission (kind of a race driver flavor :)), but it's a **** of a lot easier on your mechanicals to just apply your brakes. Plus, replacing your brake pads is a **** of a lot cheaper than having your transaxle rebuilt. Yes, by all means enjoy your xB2, but also, be nice to your xB2 -- in the process you'll be nice to your wallet as well :p! In any case, god luck with it dude :)!

they want my to replace shifter bushings to see if it fixs problem. also stated you cannot puchase shifter bushings alone. you must purchase shifter cable assembly and it should fix problem

Ahh I see. so you engaged 3rd and 4th gear and feel there is nothing there? Did you try rolling the car or at least jack the car up in the front while it was engaged in those gears and spin the wheels? It felt like it was in neutral?
Did the dealer think that 3rd and 4th gear were gone too? what was the mechnics conclusion besides trying to throw parts in it?

not to be a [email protected]# but do you guys know how to drive a manual. I have had two 08 scion xb and both manual transmission. First one was purchased brand new and was driven daily on street and highway and raced a couple times in 1/8 and 1/4 mile tracks and never had a issue. My current xb has 92k miles and i drive it hard and down shift all the time and have had no issues either. i do currently have MT-90 oil and it did make a difference when gears go in but nothing has happened like the original post. I also have aluminium bushing to eliminate slop but would like to install a TRD short throw for a better feel.

I'm with you man. I regret my decision to get manual everyday. Although I have ~65k on my 2010 and haven't experienced any of the problems these guys are having, it really is a crappy drivetrain.(besides engine)

The combination of long clutch travel, high engagement point, no clutch feel, horrible electronic throttle response and sometimes notchy shifter, it gets very annoying to drive at times. And I don't know about yours, but mine has also developed excessive play/lash in the whole drivetrain.

Yup! People who don't see the issue have never driven anything else!! I have been driving stick even when I didn't have a license. I like the car and it's looks for a cheap car, But I which scion would of done a better job on the 5 speed. Does anyone have anything that makes this easier to live with? I installed the trd short which makes it much better but far from enjoyable.

All I can say is good luck dude! I had my transmission fail in my last car - an auto Grand Prix. I had transmission strangeness for quite a while before (my suspicion), and was even under aftermarket warranty and took it to the dealer a couple times, then finally lost 1st gear one day, then reverse, this after the warranty expired. I was able to drive it to a transmission shop without 1st. Like I said, I had the car in to get it checked out before it failed, but since I didn't have a "failure", the warranty doesn't pay for taking a transmission apart for diagnosis. I listened to the stupid GM dealer shop and thought things were just getting older - they weren't too concerned. After it failed, I wished I had paid whatever I needed to out of pocket to get it checked out prior to my warranty expiring.
