I hit a deer Part 2 That noise !

OK.. so i found out what the noise was while i was driving or hitting a bump. Its seems that the plastic engine thingy has clamps on it and one of them must of gotten scrap off which left a panel dangling and when i hit a bump it made that noise. i think this wasn't cause by the deer but my steep drive way that makes me do a deep dip which bottoms out the car which scraps the under body plastic thing. i had the toyota tech clip off the damaged part and no more noise
so my questions are :
1: if i got 18 inch rims will this help with ground clearance?
2: and how does it effect the ride and gas millages? if i got bigger tires

3: any cool rims you know of for the xb?

Sure hope that it was not the drop down portion of the engine panel that protects the oil filter from road damage....some dealer technicians have been known to cut them off to make it easier to do the oil change...had to have the whole panel replaced (at the dealers cost) due to that dumb move on the part of a service tech. The panels are held on with "push-in-pull-out" devices" much like other trim...if one had been scraped off it could have been replaced without cutting off part of the panel...not sure that it is a big deal, but something I would check on.

this looked like the front got clipped from me bottoming out and a deep drive way. its a a small piece not located near the oil pin. I;m sure it will be fine..

That plastic "thingy" could be important for damage protection or cooling issues--better check it out. As for ground clearance, the size of your rim is only one factor. Equally important is the tire size (from rim to ground). Many people get lower profile tires to compliment their rims which negates ground clearance. If you take your stock rim and put a lower profile tire on it the ground clearance will be decreased. You have to determine if you want looks or ground clearance or both and at what cost. Chief
hold on a minute bigger rims do nothing for ground clearance just as smaller rims do nothing for ground clearance.

its simple the bigger the rim the lower the profile tire the smaller the rim the bigger the profile.

in the race world they started low -profile tires to improve handeling this is due to less lateral movment of the tire.since the wall of the tire is smaller it has less give.
automotive industies did this but went to larger diameter rims for two reasons. 1 its so they didn't have to recalibrate the speedometers and 2 it became 'cool' so they could charge more.

so my point is if you want to raise the box or lower it look to the suspension if you want to get big rims be careful to make sure you get the correct profile for the rim (i use tire rack for this) this is very important because the speed the speedometer indicates is a calculation made witch is : the constant multiplied by the variable. cxv=s c= the exterior diameter of a new stock tire, v= the revs of the cv-joint, s= the speed at witch you are traveling. so to make sure you don't get speeding tickets take my advice.

my best example of this is one of my friends bought a car in the sping and put the summers he was given on.
the rim was the correct size but the profile was off (65 in place of 75) after a while he noticed he keeped getting passed on the high-ways so we did a test I was driving at 100kmh (60mph) and he was at 90kmh(55-56mph) and the faster I would go the bigger the gap would get.

so food for thought
