I finally got around to changing this, been meaning to for a long time.
dealers charge $20 for the filter and labor to put it in.

Home Depot sells 3m filtrite filters for $10 for the 1000s of $16 for the 1250 ultra.

Remove glove box. it just pops right out, don't be shy. behind the glove box is a white box with an end cap on it, remove end cap. remove filter. take used filter and trace the correct size onto the filtrite filter. cut. put new filter in with wire side up and reverse procedure.

One filtrite filter is enough material to make 6 - 8 cabin filters. save the original filter for future tracing.

voila! fresh air in the cabin.

you can also take your favorite scent of "TREE AIR FRESHENER" and put it in there on top of the filter. whenever you click on the heat or ac you get a burst of FRESHNESS!

All I did was take the filter out and place it in the sink with some tide let it sit a little while, rinsed it out, let it air dry, good as new, then I took some essential oil (scent of choice) put a few drops on the dried filter, good as new, no $ spent. Happy Holidays!!! :naughty:

i imagine you could only do this process so many times before the filter starts to break down. I would just change it.

I'm with Joey...too much work and it's not going to last very long.  Puts me in mind of having to wash the filter on my lawn mower every other time we use it because it's so dusty here.  Too much work.  I do like the idea of the essential oils, though.  Thanks everyone for the ideas.

Edit: I picked up the ultra 1250 Filtrete at Home Depot today. Where I live there is a lot of dust and pollen, so I'm sure I will need to change that filter at least every 5,000 or so. Thanks, again for the tip.

So much useful information on these forums!

I bought the 1250 at Home Depot for $16. Looks like I can for sure make 6 new filters out of one sheet. That's 3 for my xB and 3 for my daughter's tC. Here's how the stock filters look after 7700 miles on the xB and 6500 miles on the tC.

I read this thread last week, not very long before I took my box for it's 15000 mile service, and was thinking of stopping by Home Depot on the way home to pick up said filter (as well as Pep-boys, as my windshield wipers were getting rather crappy).

Anway, when the service person came out to discuss my car, she said I needed wipers (no surprise there) and a cabin filter as I did not have one.

So waht I am wondering now is, is there a bracket that goes around the filter? Kinda hard to tell for sure from your picture.

Great write-up, BTW :)

In cleaning your old air filter you don't have to spend more moneys to do it. You just have to be creative and wise to save your money. What I did is I removed mine from the wall and washed it with soap and little liquid bleach. I dropped a few of air freshener scent in it when it is already dried.
