My experience with 5050 type LED strips is that they don't provide enough light output to be useful as DRLs. In full sun their light output is drowned out by the light of the sun. See

LED strips do look good at night but if they are located so close to the headlight then their light output will be drowned out by the headlight.

If you want to experiment, you can put LED strips on the outside edges of the headlights, just to see how they look and work. This approach has the most impact and least amount of work and risk. There is a new 5630 type LED strip available now that is over 2X brighter than the 5050 type, this might be bright enough to be useful. You can get a 2 meter strip of waterproof 5630 type LEDs on eBay for less than $7 shipped:
1M 5M 3528 5050 5630 SMD 300 LED White RGB Flexible Strip Light Waterproof Xmas | eBay.

Have fun and let us know how it works out!
