Today I got a letter in the mail from Scion.

It's a Limited Service Campaign (limited time offer) regarding certain 2008-2009 model year Scion xB vehicles.

For a limited time offer (program offered until October 31, 2014) any Scion dealer will replace the Ignition Coils on the Scion xB at NO CHARGE.

Scion states that on certain xB's model years 2008-2009 "there is a possibility that under high temperature conditions a crack may develop on the circuit board of the igntion coil. If a crack occurs, the check engine light (MIL) could be illuminated, rough idling and a reduction in engine power may result. If this condition occurs one or more of Diagnostic Trouble Cods P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354 will be recorded."

So before you're inconvenienced, any Scion dealer will replace the Igniton Coils on your vehicle at an authorized Scio dealer.

Scion's gonna be proactive and fix the situation for you before it occurs. That's great customere service! There's been lots of talk on the forums about coils fouling out. Even though I'm only at 25K I'm gonna quickly take advantage of this offer. I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially since I've already suffered the dreaded "pink spray line" of the water pump issue. When I took it in, I received a brand new water pump with no questions asked.

For xB owners that have replaced the coils before this notice was sent out, there's a way to get re-imbursed for any repairs done to their vehicle. Just hit up Toyota Motor Sales.

I still love my xB after 3 1/2 yrs of ownership. I'll be a Toyota buyer for life.

Perhaps that explains what happened to me! I recently paid $27 (Ebay) to replace a defective coil (heat sensitivity IMO), but given my out-of-pocket, as long as it doesn't become a trend, I guess I'm OK :)! The only thing that concerns me is I didn't receive that mailing :(!

Did the letter have a referance number on it? The water pump problem reminded me of when I had a Tundra (2000). While having an oil change, they said that the pump was leaking, and replaced it for free. But that happened twice and the second one cost me labor only.
So that means that there were actually three pumps that had a bad seal. I'm wondering how many xB owners have had water pump problems? The main way to check for that problem would be to regularly check the coolant level. If it's low, it's going somewhere, so next time your car is on a lift, have the guy look at the pump to see if there is any pink traces below that area.

Does the letter state that they (Scion) will replace the coils, just take it in? Or will they (Scion) replace the coils only if they are found defective when the codes are thrown? What is the build date of your xB, it's located on the drivers door sticker when you open the door. It gives the month/year i.e. 07/08 is July 2008.

I had the pink line on the underside of the hood, passenger side where the belt/pump is located. When the water pump leaks fluid (anti freeze is pink) a pink line will be seen.

Scion will replace the pump for free within the 5 year/60k miles warranty.

I had my pink line at 41k and Scion replaced the pump "Free" because it's under warranty!

So what is this about the pink spray line? I have it. I have had my xB for almost 3 years and have seen no correspondence from Toyota on it ( I did buy it used).

Chris
Pink spray line is a bad water pump I believe. I got mine done on my 09 xB under warranty. Id recommend getting it fixed asap.

and the coil packs were also an issue on my 09 xB which were replaced under warranty.

Took it in this morning and had the water pump replaced under warranty. I have a 500 mile drive next week and didn't want it going south on the trip.

Got home from work and found the recall notice for the Ignition Coils in my mailbox.

Just got my letter for the Ignition Coil Replacement....

I just noticed another issue that bothers me on my 2008 xB...the rubber seal at the bottom of the door windows is cracking/sagging on all four doors......has anyone else noticed this problem? (This is the seal to keep water from the inside of the door panels...rides against the windows when they go up/down etc.)

I just got the defective coil notice yesterday.

I was oblivious to the water pump seal problem, but when I took the xB to the dealer for an oil change a couple of months ago, they noticed the leak and fixed it under the powertrain warranty as I was past the regular three year warranty.

One of the easiest ways to see if the water pump is leaking is to keep an eye on the coolant level in the reserve tank. Mark the level with a piece of tape on the tank and keep a check every once a month. If it decreases, it's going somewhere. Also it would be a good time to check the oil level with all the talk about oil consumption.
