It would be cool on the home page to have a live chat box, or a way to set up a live chat so users could get together and talk about stuff quicker instead of having to post and wait.

I've seen that sort of thing before on forums, and it never works out.

The bad part is that if everybody starts using it, you don't maintain any historical references, and the forum portion of the site becomes stagnate.

Sorry, I missed this... I assume you're referring to a shout box... I agree that they do take away from the forum, but more harmful, IMO, is that they're much harder to moderate and open to abuse... I appreciate the suggestion, but I'd rather focus on building and maintaining an active forum community first

you could add your AIM, Yahoo or other messenger name in profile and try chatting that way...
