I think it's FUNDAMENTALLY (that's my "word of the week"...picked it up from the debates) a function of the fan noise echoing off the hard surfaces of the building at the drive-thru. That particular situation just amplifies a normal condition.
Loud fan when it kicks in.
I have a 2009 xB and when the fan kicks in, it's pretty loud. I hear it often in drive-thrus and when at idle. Is this normal?

Nah, I can still hear it when i'm standing out of it when its idling
My cooling fan is no louder than any other one I have heard..
