Mad Cars and Englishmen: Toyota Readies Motorsports-Themed Aygo Crazy for London Debut

LONDON — Toyota is taking the tire-smoking route to the 2008 British Auto Show, where it will debut its Aygo Crazy one-off concept.

"This is a car that is all about the joy of driving," said the Japanese automaker in a statement. "With no electronic handling aids, no power steering and no ABS, it is like a kart with doors and a roof."

The Aygo Crazy — yes, it really is pronounced "I go crazy" — is outfitted with a rear-mounted four-cylinder 1.8-liter VVT-i engine with a Toyota Motorsport turbo conversion kit that boosts output to 197 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. It is linked to a five-speed manual transmission. The concept gets a custom cooling system with a ginormous front-mounted aluminum radiator.

Toyota said the Aygo Crazy has an estimated maximum speed of 127 mph and a 0-60 time of less than 5.7 seconds.

Unlike its tamer counterpart, the Czech Republic-built Aygo city car, the Aygo Crazy has a custom-made body with a carbon-fiber rear wing taken from the racecars in the American Champ Car series. The exterior treatment is rounded out with 17-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin gets sports seats with four-point safety harnesses and a full roll cage.

By the way, Toyota explains that the "T2 4YGO" license plate stands for "turbocharged, two-seat Aygo."

What this means to you: Toyota lets its hair down with this Aygo concept, but don't look for one in your driveway. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
