New tires

I've noticed that there is a lot of talk about new wheels(17'sto 20's),but not about new tires that are the same dia.only wider. On past cars, I found the ride a little smoother on tires that are 1 to 2 times over the OE width. Any thoughts?

My guess is slightly wider (much over 1 times is huge) would result in a somehat softer ride, but would hurt steering accuracy and tread wear. Am I misunderstanding the question?
The size on the xB now are 205's,going to 215's is what I'm thinking of. Tread wear might be a problem if the wheels aren't wide enough to keep the tires' profile correct on the road. If not, the tires would draw and keep the tread contacting equally all across the width of the tread. Also, the more rubber on the road might reduce MPG.
The reason I was asking was, I had a '00 Tundra with the "off road" package. One of the things it had was oversized tires. The standard was 245's the option had 265's which road really well. The door jamb sticker for inflation didnot reflect the bigger ones, therefore was incorrect. After going back to the dealer, they gave me the correct inflation spec for the bigger tires.
