I was talking with a buddy the other day about mpg performance and fuel types. He said he and another friend of his had done some mpg comparisons using non-ethanol fuel and 10% ethanol fuel in their Hondas.

The result: their engines performed better with the non-ethanol fuel and got about 4 mpgs better mileage. This mpg gain is more than enough to pay for the difference in the mid-grade fuel price hike over the low-grade that contains ethanol.

Anyone done something like this with your 2nd Gen xB?

Good luck finding non-ethenol fuel now a days. There was a place local to me that swore off the stuff but around 2010 they were no longer able to sell it or get it at their station. If I had the choice I would never run ethenol.

Ethanol has less energy than an equivalent amount of gasoline. So it follows that more ethanol = lower mileage. If you google info on e85 (flexfuel) you will find that its lower price is offset by the decrease in mileage.

I believe ethanol is added to nearly all gasolines as an oxygenator (in place of MTBE).

I've only seen one place that has no Ethanol lately, it was in Eureka Springs, at Asylum. No gas station there had Ethanol but I'm not sure why.

It's required here because of the air quality or lack thereof. In Eureka Springs, they probably don't have that problem. We also have to deal with "summer blend" and "winter blend" which just means the amount of crap in the gas and variations in mpg.

theres a couple places here in miami that have non ethanol. look places that have a lot of boating (for instance here by the keys) they offer non ethanol boat fuel. so maybe around like marinas or lakes and stuff. i know a lot of supra guys and 3000GT guys use ethanol due to the higher octane rating, but have to add like 25% more fuel to compensate for the lack of power.
