I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive, relatively quiet muffler. When I say quiet, I mean I want to hear both my car and my music. I'm a little worried about it getting annoying on longer trips, but I don't usually drive more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time. I don't want to replace the whole exhaust, just the muffler. I've also looked at the $50 eBay mufflers - They sound alright on Youtube… any word on those?

My main concerns are not “which muffler should I go with?" (that’s not the point of this thread), but rather “will it get annoying on trips longer than one hour?” and “can I still hear a more quiet muffler with my windows up and music at a normal volume?”

Remember that saying "you get what you pay for". I didn't want to shell out almost $400 for the TRD Sport Exhaust but I did. Mostly because I also listened to the youtube videos. I was impressed with the tone and also because you do not hear the drone inside the car while you're driving. Now that it's installed...I love it.

Now as far as the Ebay ones...couldn't say...but if they are really that cheap...then that's probably what they are going to sound like...just my $.02.

Good luck.

I love the TRD, but it's hard to spend almost all my summer money on that. I probably won't end up getting the eBay universal one, I was just looking at all my options and that was one of them.

Thanks. You've been a lot of help lately!

What is the intent in changing out the muffler?
Sound?
Power?
Looks?

That makes a difference on what you want, and in turn how it sounds and whether or not it "drones."

Looks and sound mainly. I'm not worried about winning races, but I won't be upset if I get a little more power ;)

After reading a thread on Scion Life about essentially the same exhaust, I decided to order an axel-back off eBay for $75 literally moments ago (there were a few that had exactly the same info, so I just chose the cheapest). I think I'll like it, as I hear it isn't too loud. On Scion Life, people tend to be pretty rough compared those on here (hence my 400+ posts on here and <10 posts on SL), and there were only about 2 people who said it was lame and they didn't even have it.

Anyways, I've never done anything like this before and thought I'd start small in case stuff like this isn't for me. If I would've ordered the TRD it would have eaten most of my summer money, but this way I can still afford to do little things like paint my engine cover.

I know this thread didn't last long, but thank you for your help both of you. I really appreciate it and this website.

i have a obx evo muffler on mine that you can find on ebay.... i love it... its super quiet i can literally scream louder than my muffler. my whole exhaust is there i just replaced the muffler... our catalytic is like freaking sub marine down there so i did not bother on getting rid of it... my advice is if you like it get it.. but obx is not a bad brand... allot of people here on guam prefer to use these mufflers more than the higher end brands.. but its totally up to you... i bought my muffler at a local shop on guam for $150.00 this was before i grew the balls to order stuff off ebay.. so yah just don't get rid of your catalytic and you should be fine.. unless you get a cherry bomb or flow master or something like that.. or i do not really know i have never seen a xb2 with a cherry bomb haha..

Thanks for the advice! I'm glad you like your muffler. I would've thought your exhaust was pretty loud for some reason... Just kinda looks like it would be I guess. I have bought a few things for my xB on eBay: Alpine speakers, AVS vent visors, and my PA system speaker. Haha, I've seen a tC on youtube with a glasspack, but it just didn't seem to fit. I don't know much about cats or anything, but I do know the muffler I ordered tonight is an axel-back, not a cat-back. I'm so stoked about getting it!

Let us know how it sounds and looks. Pix would be great. If I could have found an exhaust that was cheaper but the looked and sounded like the TRD, I would have jumped on it.

I installed my eBay axle-back exhaust today and so far I'm really happy with it. Installation was pretty easy, it looks great mounted, and sounds good when standing behind the car. I'll update in a few days with better info.
