replace them at 75K with NGK Iridium plugs. The car felt smoother only reason for changing them were that the car was used when i purchased it, so i did a tune up so i could feel better with new oil and plugs since there was no records of any service from previous owner.

I think Zinger is right. Way back when (50yrs.), we used to replace plugs every year,in the spring along with the points, condenser, rotor cap and rotor. Oh, we didn't forget the plug wires and air filter also. Today, I don't think you could find a lot of those things to replace on a car.
