I was surprised to find that TRD offers an LSD for the xB. Is this a new addition or something that's been around for a while? Does anyone have it installed?

it has been around just not to many people install them on the xb you usually see them being installed on the Tc's

What would the benefit be on a heavy, four-door wagon?

if you have turbo or supecharged xb i only see it benefiting those setups for better traction but not much for a NA set up
Only time I could see it being useful on the xB, barring turbo and supercharged applications, is if you do a lot of twisty or canyon driving. Always netter control having both wheels keeping good traction with the road. I would assume that the TRD unit is just a re-labeled Quaife unit.

What's Quaife?
Quaife is one of the larger LSD manufacturers in the world. Here is a link to the LSD they make for the Scion. QDF25E | Quaife USA Just did some research and yes, they do make the TRD unit.

According to TRD, the LSD unit only fits the M/T gear box.

I don't know much about auto transmissions, as I've only ever owned manuals before. Is the diff the same between the transmissions?

If you look at the "compatible vehicles" tab, it lists both the manual and automatic transmissions as compatible.
