Ok, I am new to this forum but I feel that I have done a sufficient amount of research to ask this question.

Does anybody know what the little cubby/ square cup holder behind the actual two cup holders was designed for? If not what have you guys used it for?

Sorry if it is a lame question, I just haven't been about to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks.

You know . . .
I've wondered that before too.
Mostly, it is at a light . . . waiting. I promptly forget to ask or look it up when I get out.

The shaping is odd and seems to have SOMETHING particular in mind . . .

It makes a great trash-bin!

Was there an ashtray insert for it at one time?

Cell phone holder. I also keep my little fan there so I don't lose it after going out dancing.

The "issue" the original poster was addressing is that it is a fairly complex design, with two different opening size levels (bottom part is smaller across than the top part).
Also, the main "box" area has some complexity to the shaping that shows intent to the design. It looks as to be designed for something specific in mind, besides "just another" storage bin in the center console.

Anyone know what influenced the area's DESIGN and intent?
(Not just what it is used for)

Good point. One edge has corners that are recessed, suggesting maybe a hinged door was planned at some point... I dunno. But I use it for my mp3 playa.

You have to remember that this vehicle comes from creative minds. Take that thought and cross it with the location and its obvious. You have two holes so to speak. One is small enough to hold the cord pluged into the bottom of a device and the top area hold the device. I would say primarily for an ipod but it can also be used with the cell phones. Since the use of the vehicle in japan is a delivery truck and everyone has a phone I would guess that the phone is the primary idea but its wide enough for bigger units like ipods.

Then again I could be wrong...its happened before.....ONCE.

So , as an old fart I remember when the walkman was invented. Does anyone else know why and who first made a radio with no speakers?

I spoke with someone from scion on their website... All I got was that it was not designed for anything in particular and just to be used as extra storage space....

I still think that there has to be a better use for it.

As I recall, it's for your iPod...
It has the smaller area so you can snake the cord back and around to the port in the console. The upper area is for the iPod itself to rest on.

Still a little odd...

Put BBQ sauce in it and use it for your chicken nuggets.
