Presently, . . .
Detailed map(s) and a vehicle compass (the ball kind on the windscreen).

One day, I MAY get a GPS, esp. for the detailed interactive map. My parents have a Ford Flex and I've looked at their stock GPS and like the map feature. If I could find a GPS w/ that, I would be interested!

I use the TomTom One, Mounted it with velcro just behind the steering wheel, so when I look through the steering wheel I can see it, snaked the power cord upalong the steering colum. That way when I remove it, there is no trace.

By that I meant a detailed paper map (I was called "old school" on one of the Scion forums for being happy w/ a map. I added the compass after getting somewhat turned around in rural Abbeville County and going the wrong way for 5 miles. After a few bucks and a suction cup compass, I don't have that problem now . . .

More to topic . . .

What is a CHEAP GPS w/ a rather good map feature? That is the only feature I care about.

I like that touch of tucking the power cord so that there is no trace of it when the unit is removed. Do you have any pictures of it? I was thinking like that. Maybe have the cord go under the dash and drill a hole so that it comes out the bottom of the cup that is left of the steering wheel.

Hey drew, I didn't have to do any drilling, but here are some pics of the way she is mounted.

Someone already mentioned my thread in the DIY section but I'll post it here too. I built a mount out of balsa wood from the local hobby store to fit in the cubby left of the steering wheel. Took maybe an hour to build and works great and doesn't damage the car at all. I painted it with this plasticote stuff to help it blend in. Then I just screwed my navigon mount right into my custom base.

I use an old navigon 2100 hacked to run iGO 8. I love the iGO software. IMHO it's the best software out there and I've tried all of the major ones and most of the less heard of ones.

I now have one of the Verizon Droid ERIS phones and plan on modifying my mount to mount the phone horizontally so I can use the Google Navigation when it's available for the phone. In the mean time I'll just keep using the navigon.

The funny thing about the mount... I designed it to sit flat in the cubby and be completely flush with the top. Unfortunately, I didn't follow my own instructions and built it backwards lol. Now it sits a bit at an angle and isn't completely flush but still works well lol.

First I made a plexiglass cover for the cubbie, painted it black and used 3M tape to hold it in place then just used the suction holder.
