For those making mounting plates . . .
The dash is a charcoal gray, rather than black. So, a dark gray paint would blend in better.
Also, I would mount one on the flat part in front of the driver, next to the gauges. It is a perfect place to one.

Dark gray would look good, you're right. Are you talking abou that flat part directly behind the steering wheel? 'Cause that looks like a great spot. That way I could use the little circle "mounting disc" thing that came with my Garmin and not have to worry about making my own. Plus, I could still use that cubbie to the left for sunglasses or my cell phone when needed... Tomorrow I'll go outside and see if the steering wheel blocks the screen at all.

I have a pad mounted just behind the steering wheel, and it is below the upper shelf. So, unless you are VERY short AND have the seat at the lowest setting, it should be above the steering wheel, in sight, and directly in front of the driver.

Great thanks. I'll more than likely put it right behind the wheel then. I'll test it out tomorrow just to make sure though.

The reason I went with black for the plexiglass cover is that the GPS is black. Besides, the cover is so small you don't even notice it.

Exactly. Here's where I put the disc:

I should have a picture of the Garmin actuallly on there soon. The adhesive that came on there didn't stick the the dash material, so now there is 3M double sided tape hold it on there. Hopefully it will stick... :x

Great spot and even better pics!
Thanks for the kind words, ocotillo! :)
Your GPS looks as big as the screen at the new Cowboys Stadium.
Hahaha. Well, this has a 4.3 inch screen, so not quite as big as the Cowboys one. ;) I've seen the Cowboys big screen in person and it really is as big as everyone says it is!

I don't have one as of yet but have been researching extensively. I also ride a Harley and a snowmobile so I need portability as well as durability. I have found the Garmin Nuvi 500/550 to be the best for all 3 purposes and will be ordering soon, most likely after XMAS as the sales hit. Chief
Ordered the NUVI 550 thru Amazon yesterday and will arrive Thursday. Also ordered a handlebar mount for my snowmobile... will be getting some trail maps for up load and my trip to MINN in FEB. Did a lot of research and this is one of the best for a portable that yo can use in the car, hiking, on a boat, motorcycle, or also a sled!! I can move it from my lsed to my Harley and to my xB. Let you know in March how the snow was...

I have the nuvi 50 and love it. I really liked the little shelf behind the steering wheel on the gen1. That's where I mounted my GPS. No shelf in the gen2 and the mount that comes with the GPS is too big to mount on the vertical part. It puts the GPS in the way of the steering wheel and I didn't like it on the shelf above the wheel so I bought a vent mount from eBay for $3, cut off the tabs in the back and the hole across the top and sanded it down. A little double stick 3M and voila!
