Got one of the first '08 Xbs delivered to Hiland Toyota's lot. My wife and I really love this car. Now 47K miles later the engine is having fit's. My wife abandoned the Xb and now it's mine to deal with.

At first she came home from work one night and said the engine light, anti-skid and VSC lights came on and it worried her. I couldn't see anything out of sorts under the hood so I disconnected the Bat. grd. for a few seconds. Secured it and restarted the car. Fixed. Three days later, it happens again. I did the cable thing and the lights went out again, everything looks 4.0. A week later my wife comes home from work and said the car is "running bad." Next morning I drive the Xb around and it runs perfect, but the same three lights are burning bright and golden. I did the battery cable thing again and the car runs great for several days.

Since my wife relieved me of our new Cube, I drive the Xb. Last night I take my kid to a theater 50 miles from home, 8 wintry degrees outside, then 5 miles from our destination and the car starts to vibrate, it loses power and it would barely maintain 55mph. Felt like it was running on two cylinders. I pulled off of the road and shut it off to see if it would somehow reset itself. Although it started right up and idled fine, fat chance, drive it and it balked. I did that start and restart two other times to no avail, turned around and drove this sick puppy on home. Just for giggles, I stopped at a gas station and refilled the tank to see if anything would change, but it still ran like a sick dog.

When my daughter and I made it home, we garaged the Xb and hopped into my trusty Dodge Quad Cab and made it to a different theater, showing the same show.

After coming home from the show, two 1/2 hours later, I hop in the Xb, fire the puppy up and it purrs like a kitten. Golden warning lights shining brightly. I undo the cable again and all is fine with the world. WTF!

Now the dilemma. What do I do next? The Xb is 11k past its warrantee. The Scion dealership I bought this thing from is 70 miles to the north(closest around.) And will they be able to replicate this problem when it runs fine or should I drive the thing up there on two cylinders?

Man, sorry to hear about your problems.
1. Is there a service center near by to take it to so that you wouldnt have to drive 70 miles?
2. Take it to Toyo and pay to see whats up.

Good Luck in whatever you do.

if this is an older one i know there was some problems with the wireing harness that made the lights go on. call toyota and check for a TSB or recall on the wiering harness. even if its over 36k they still have to fix it.

The nearest Toyota dealer is Deery's. I took a truck in there once for a recall item, when I got it back my stereo, C.B. and cab lights no longer worked, then they wanted to charge me $3 for two fuses they took out and didn't replace. Total morons running that dealership.

I looked for any recalls on the Xb. Didn't find any, will try looking up any TSBs. It really does seem like an electrical problem, causing a mechanical one. Thanks I'll keep searching.

If you belong to COSTCO you can buy your own service code tester for under 100 bucks--then when your lights come on, plug it in and see what codes you are getting.

Ever plug one of those things in and try to diagnose something under a car hood when it's single digit temps with the wind cutting through your Carharts? Those AutoZone guys would laugh at me. Been there, done that.

Even if I had an analyzer, I don't have the $1,300 Scion service manual(they gotta be joking) to peruse over. I'll bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.

Hmmm, a quick check would be to pull the plugs and see if one or more is not receiveing spark (black, wet, etc)...most likey it would be the coil for that plug or plugs....coils are available on line for about $75.00 each.

Cars runs fine for miles and miles, out of nowhere starts sputtering, loses power. Pull over, shut off engine, remove battery cable momentarily, start car, drive for miles and miles, acts as everything is normal again.

Xb also has the ability of healing itself while sitting in the garage overnite, except for the glowing golden lights, there again, it needs the magic touch of a 10mm open end.

I thought I saw somewhere on one of these forums that the codes were published on line by some member???

Continuing Saga of a Broken Xb

Scheduled an appointment with Hiland Toyota Scion in Moline, Illinois last Friday. I told the service guy I thought it was acting like a bad coil, and that there was a TSB #10030353 on this '08 model Xb. "Some vehicles may exhibit a M.I.L. On condition with diagnostic trouble codes(DTCs) PO351, PO352, PO353 and/or PO354 (ignition coilPrimary/ secondary circut) Stored in the engine control module/ECM. I asked if he had parts on hand, 'cuz I lived 80mi away. He said, "We'll have to diagnose the problem first."

Went to the service Dept. this morning, the car ran lousy for fifty of the eighty miles. Freezing rain and snow up and back.

First thing out of the Peter's mouth, "Engine diagnostics will cost you $39, sign here." After a twenty minute wait Peter hands me a piece of $39 paper saying, "CK ENG CODE LIGHT IS ON. C/S RUNNING ROUGH. CODE PO354 COIL D MALFUNCTION. PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE $201.00"

"So you guys expect me to pay the full amount?" I asked. "Yeah, your car is 11,000 mi out of warranty, sorry." So says Peter. "Can't you call Scion and ask If they'd give me a break?" "Like I said your car's out of warranty." Says Peter. "Well fix the damned thing and I'll deal with Scion myself." Peter then says, "Well we'll have to schedule you another appointment in a couple of days or so so we can order the parts from Chicago." With my hackles raised, "You expect me to drive my broken car home, park it, wait another two days, then drive my broken car back up here so you can maybe fix it?" "How 'bout I leave the damned thing here to cut down on the wear and tear and you give me a loaner so I can get my Christmas shopping finished?" "Sorry, we don't provide loaner cars."

"Well I guess I'm finished here, except for paying for a $39.00 diagnosis, I already gave to you." Then Peter says,"Do you want me to schedule another another appointment?" "Are you out of your mind? I'll get the work done somewhere else. Screw this place!"

The car ran fine 'til I got ten miles from home, then the lights came on again and it ran rough again. I called 1-866-70-Scion and the guy told me to take the car to Deery Toyota near my home, pay the bill, turn in my receipts and Scion would cut me a check to cover the costs. After calling Deery's the service guy said he'd go ahead and order the parts, then schedule an appointment.

Why do they always make you jump through hoops?

All is well that ends well! Does anyone know just where "coil D" is located? Not a chance that it is just one of four?

I think for the most part, dealership service areas are out to screw you.

I had a transmission blow up on my old car (2003 Matrix, man 5spd) and took it in to get an estimate on a replacement. I told them I need a replacement cause all but two gears were gone. I saw them drive around the block, give me a stupid estimate and charged me $100 for diagnostic fees, when really I needed them to just look up a price on a tranny/clutch/rear main seal and labor.

Let's hope the other three coils hold.

Took the xB into Derry Toyota this morning. They put it on the analyzer and confirmed PO354, coil D/#4 coil, fault. Removed engine cover, replaced coil, cleared codes. $121.45 for the coil(twice what It's worth,) $40 for labor to install, Deery didn't even charge me for the analyzer this time. To my satisfaction, Deerys even washed and dried off the last two winter storms covering my car.

Deery Toyota even faxed Scion all of the necessary papers so I can get a refund for my expenses. Let's hope the other three coils hold. Scion said this was a one time offer.
